Ann and Les enjoyed their journey to the South with Waitress (2007.) They acknowledge it starts slow but the warm performance of Keri Russell grew on them steadily. It’s a comedy about troubled marriages and the resulting affairs including Ms. Russell’s with her OB/GYN played by Nathan Fillion but somehow they play it so sweetly that it ends up tugging at your heartstrings. For their GREENLIGHT Rentals, Les recommends another film about a down-and-out-though-plucky waitress called Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore (1974.) In this film Ellen Burstyn plays a recently widowed woman who sets out the change her life in Hollywood but ends up sidetracked in a diner in Arizona. This movie has lots of good characters exploring life which is a pleasant surprise from director Martin Scorcese. Ann also recommends a film set in a diner. In this one Michelle Pfeiffer and Al Pacino play tough-luck people who find true-romance in this Gary Marshall directed film called Frankie and Johnny (1991.)
