GREENLIGHT #60: Lady in the Water (with "American Splendor" and "Splash")

Ann and Les disagree vehemently on Lady in the Water (2006.) Les gives it a green because he thinks it's a charming little story about the importance of everyone on this earth and he was thoroughly entertained by Paul Giammatti's performance. Ann,on the other hand, was thoroughly insulted by this film and gives it a raging red. She thinks M. Night Shyamalan has pulled the wool over everyone's eyes and she's determined to get that wool off. She's particularly galled by this film because it is purporting to be an "intelligent" film when, she thinks, it's really unintelligible. For their GREENLIGHT Rentals, Les couldn't think of a comparable faiy tale movie but he does think that Mr. Giamatti plays Harvey Pekar wonderfully in the real-life cartoon movie American Splendor (2003.) Meanwhile, Ann was ever-so-happy to recommend a fairy tale movie directed by the lady-in-the-water's father Ron Howard called Splash (1984.)

GREENLIGHT #59: My Super Ex-Girlfriend (with "Kill Bill I & II" and "To Die For")

Ann and Les were not equally amused by My Super Ex-Girlfriend (2006) but neither were expecting that much going in. Les actually found himself chuckling through the film and was pleasantly surprised by Luke Wilson's performance so he gave it a yellow. Ann didn't laugh much but recognized it to be the farce that it is so she offers a yellow-turning-red. Neither reviewer, by the way, were very impressed with Uma Thurman though. They both think she has a knack for comedy but didn't let it come through here. For their GREENLIGHT Rentals, Les recommends Ms. Thurman in two of her better performances in: Kill Bill I & II (2003 & 2004.) Ann found a movie with an actress being outrageously bad but still being funny. She recommends Nicole Kidman in To Die For (1995.)

GREENLIGHT #58: You, Me and Dupree (with "The Man Who Came to Dinner" and "What About Bob?")

Ann and Les feel very strongly about You, Me and Dupree (2006) and it isn’t a funny feeling. But only Ann gives it a red light because Les admits to a certain weakness for Kate Hudson though it’s only because she laughs exactly like her mother Goldie Hawn. Ann, on the other hand was not charmed for one second during this movie. Man did she loathe it. If she never sees Owen Wilson on screen again doing absolutely anything again, she might be happy. Meanwhile, both of them think Wilson and Matt Dillon are too old for these kind of parts (silly though they are) and Michael Douglas ought to be ashamed of himself wasting his talent in a movie like this.
For their GREENLIGHT Rentals, Les recommends one of the first and best “unwanted guest” movie called The Man Who Came to Dinner (1942.) Lots of people think this is Bette Davis'sfilm but Les and Ann both agree that it really belongs to Monty Woolley. Ann goes for a more contemporary and funny take on that same theme with What About Bob?(1991.) She thinks Bill Murray and Richard Dreyfuss do an excellent job playing off one another and allowing us to laugh ourselves silly along the way.

GREENLIGHT #57: Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest (with "The Sea Hawk" and "The Pirate")

Ann and Les didn't feel very matey about Pirates of the Caribbean" Dead Man's Chest (2006) but they don't think it's the worst thing they ever saw. If you saw the first movie and you liked Johnny Depp playing the loopy Jack Sparrow and you think you'll be charmed by watching him doing it again for two-and-a-half hours, then go ahead. For Ann and Les, however, the joke only worked the first time. This time it goes on and on and when he's not on screen the other pirates are talking but their accents and their costumes make them impossible to hear. Meanwhile, they both agree that Keira Knightley turned in another lovely performace but it was just too small a role to help the movie that much. For their GREENLIGHT Rentals, Les recommends one of the first pirate movies starring the dashing Erroll Flynn called The Sea Hawk (1940.) Ann stayed with the pirate theme and recommends perhaps the most charming pirate movie ever - the musical starring Gene Kelly and Judy Garland entitled and The Pirate (1948.)

GREENLIGHT #56: The Devil Wears Prada (with "How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying" and "Funny Face")

Ann and Les absolutely adored The Devil Wears Prada (2006.) They give GREENLIGHTs to everyone involved but they save the brightest green for the performance of Meryl Streep . They say she is masterful. And then Ann always enjoys Simon Baker . For their GREENLIGHT Rentals, Les recommends one of the first "how to succeed in New York" stories appropriately called How to Succeed in Business Without Reallly Trying (1967.) Ann sticks with that theme but goes for the innocent glamour of Fred Astaire and Audrey Hepburn in Funny Face (1957.)

GREENLIGHT #55: Superman Returns (with "Se7en" and "Batman Forever")

Ann and Les don't think that Superman Returns (2006) is so super. It's not awful either. But they don't think you'll remember much about it a week after you've seen it. As a matter of fact, Les is so bored with superhero movies, that he went in another direction for his GREENLIGHT Rental. Though neither of them think much of Kevin Spacey's performance in Superman Returns, Les highly recommends him in a movie with Brad Pitt called Se7en (1995.) Ann, meanwhile, isn't over superheroes yet, she recommends Val Kilmer as Batman in Batman Forever (1995.)
