GREENLIGHT #47: The Da Vinci Code (with "The Wizard of Oz" and "Amelie")

Ann and Les both liked The Da Vinci Code (2006) though neither think it's great. For what it it, and they eagerly remind us that it's fantasy fiction, they think it's pretty darn exciting. For their GREENLIGHT Rentals, Les recommends the wonderful The Wizard of Oz (1939.) Ann recommends the charming Amelie (2001.)

GREENLIGHT #46: Poseidon (with "Lifeboat" and "The Towering Inferno")

Ann and Les wholeheartedly agree that Poseidon (2006) is a disaster movie. It's got two movie stars who embarass themselves and a bunch of up-and-comers who don't distinguish themselves. But, of course, nobody had anything to work with because it's a movie without a story. And there was no reason to remake the wonderful original. For their GREENLIGHT Rentals, Les recommends Alfred Hitchcock's smaller and very well-crafted boat disaster film Lifeboat (1944) with the amazine Tallulah Bankhead. Ann recommends Irwin Allen's disaster classic The Towering Inferno (1974) and begs Hollywood to NEVER remake it.

Ann and Les split ever-so-slightly again on Just My Luck (2006). It's a teen girl flick that Les thinks will probably be boring even to them. (Red.) Ann thinks they might get a little kick out of it. (Pale Yellow.) Both agree that as far as teen flicks go, it's amazingly clean. For their GREENLIGHT Rentals, Les recommends Big (1988) and Ann recommends 10 Things I Hate About You (1999.)

GREENLIGHT #44: Mission Impossible III (with "The Bourne Supremacy" and "Die Hard")

Ann and Les split gently on Mission Impossible III (2006). Ann thinks it's a satisfying big-budget action film. From this kind of film she expects fast-paced thrills and she thinks she got it. Les got too much of it. He says it's not horrible but it was just too loud and too fast for him. For their GREENLIGHT Rentals, Les recommends The Bourne Supremacy (2002) and Ann recommends the king of all action thrillers Die Hard (1988.)

GREENLIGHT #43: Akeelah and the Bee (with "The Karate Kid" and "Little Man Tate")

Ann and Les can't even begin to spell how excited they are about the film Akeelah and the Bee (2006) but they'd like to try. This movie makes everyone look good and feel good and be hopeful about the world. If you think you've had enough of spelling bee movies in the last year, so did they. They went in dragging their feet a bit and came out overwhelmed with joy. They're both talking Oscars for the movie and the actors. Ann says it's the best family film she's seen in fifteen years. Go see this film! Once you've done that, then Les recommends you stay home and watch The Karate Kid (1984) and Ann says you might enjoy Little Man Tate (1991.)

GREENLIGHT #42: Stick It (with "A Fish Called Wanda" and "Little Women")

Ann and Les wanted so to be able to use the title of this film Stick It (2006) in their review. But it wasn't bad enough for that. They didn't like it, mind you - too loud and too weak a story. But, overall, they don't think it's a bad movie for young girls. They're not sure that young gymnasts will be all that thrilled with it, however. Meanwhile, based on this film, Les found a way to recommend A Fish Called Wanda (1988) and Ann recommends a great film for young and old girls (and everyone else for that matter,) Little Women (1933.)
